Sue Goodchild

Painting artist and writer

Whatever the time of year there is always inspiration in the garden for the artist and the gardener. There is always something to be learned, new things to observe and appreciate.

The artist and gardener alike must develop the composition, bringing ideas and planning together.

Sue Goodchild has combined her love of painting with her love of gardens to produce this book as a tribute to her sister Mag.

Mag was an enthusiastic and talented gardener; and following her untimely death Sue set out to capture the beauty of the plants and flowers her sister loved so much.

Each flower is discussed from the points of view of both the gardener and the artist, and the text is illustrated with stunning paintings full of beauty and character, and glowing with light.

Sue's paintings reflect her love of nature and eye for exceptionally fine detail and beautiful colours. Her passion for both nature and art mixed with initial thoughts and emotions, capturing a particular atmosphere of a fleeting time of day or trick of light. Her paintings have been exhibited in numerous galleries in London, including The Royal Academy, Royal Watercolour society, The Mall galleries, Westminster gallery, Society of Women Artists and many provincially.  Her own gallery, Ticklemore Gallery, Totnes was the inspiration to open Gallery Goodchild in France as well as exhibiting in many galeries and

chateaux. Her love of nature led to the creation of a garden, a haven for bees,  butterflies and wildlife.

The passion for painting led to the creation of the garden, an extension of that passion.  The garden has a quiet beauty, giving delight, satisfaction and repose, a sense of completeness, of simple happiness between studio and garden. The Artist and the Gardener has been a labour of love and hopefully invites the reader to become an effective participant in that special world.
